3 Tips For Becoming A Better Designer In 2020
Hi Mike, I've been watching your videos too, even though the software may date slightly, I enjoy immensely watching your videos! I've learned a lot of interesting tricks in your video. Best luck to you and your businesses! Btw, I think there may also be some owners of new start-ups or designers/marketeers in smaller businesses watching your videos. It may be useful to throw in some ads targeting them? I don't know how other fans would respond to these ads, people like me would definitely complete watching these videos as you have put so much efforts making and sharing your valuable knowledge! That's just a small piece of suggestion that may or may not be helpful :)
Thank you for watching and for the advice. I know I need to go through and update some of these to the latest version of Illustrator, but want to be sure there's enough of a reason for the update, I hate it when other creators rehash old content that only has an extra 30 seconds of content but they tag is as "2024 update". Regarding the ads, I don't chose which ads appear in the videos, that's UA-cam, so it's all based on the users. I appreciate the feedback though!
@@MikePickettDesignCo no worries Mike, it can involve tons of work to do the videos, chill!
thanks! great teaching!
Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to comment.
thanks man! great!
Glad it helped!
Hi @mikepickett thank you for this tutorial. I was looking how to be proficient with the image tracing tool, and I found your tutorial very useful. Thank you for your video.
Thank you for letting me know, always happy to hear when my content is useful.
I like this more
Thanks!
what about the white logo and ignore white?..
A white logo could only have a transparent background so there would be no need to use the “Ignore white”.
But if you then add more pen lines/shapes to your drawing and set the fill to none all your live paint suddenly disappears. Not discussed anywhere on the internet.
Sorry I’ve never experienced this, I only use the tool when I’m done with the outline. Maybe something to bring to Adobe’s attention?
You are amazing, won't get tired saying this...
Thank you once again 🙏
Mike, you are a wonderful explainer! Way better than those with 500k + subscribers! Your insights are priceless, please keep doing videos!
Truly appreciate the kind words Mary! It's hard to compete against those channels - so many people want the flash, big production, etc. I'm just a guy in his basement trying to share what I know about Illustrator. I'm working on some new content and will hopefully have the time to get some put out soon.
Is there a way to drag a layer out of a layer without dragging it above?
You can only drag above or below, if there is no open or empty layer below you would need to create one. I'm not really sure that answers your question, if not please clarify what it is you're trying to accomplish and I'll see if I can provide a more detailed response.
@@MikePickettDesignCo Thank you. The thing is - I can only drag above. Below the layer always ends up in the group I am dragging it below (unless it is closed). There must be something I am missing.
how to transform in maximised zoom level ??? like precise transform
I'm not sure I'm following your question - this would be the same as doing any transform, just zoomed in. However, that said, it would be difficult to see what you're actually doing when zoomed in 64,000%.
@@MikePickettDesignCo when u zoom in a certain object, the transform handles on 4 side get lost like as they always come in the middle. Im talking about to grab the handle in the zoomed phase. how to transform then.
@@surajitdhar Sorry, I don't have that issue. When I zoom in I can still see the bounding box as well as the anchor points on the shape. It could be that you have hit cmd + H, this will hide the anchor points on a shape, but that shouldn't affect the bounding box. If you can see it when it's zoomed out, it should still be there when zoomed in.
@@MikePickettDesignCo not anchor points on shape but the points that u need to grab to adjust the transform box, each comes on the 4 side of the transform box. It don't show when you select an object and extreme zoom it.
@@surajitdhar again, sorry… I don’t have this issue, or at least I’m not seeing it as an issue. The handles will still be there, but they will not scale to the zoom. In other words - if the handle is 4 inches away from the anchor point when zoom is at 100% it will still be 4 inches away when zoomed to 64000%, meaning you would need to use the hand tool to move the canvas to get the handle into view. If you’re not seeing the handles at all, this may require support from Adobe.
Great video, helped a lot. thank you!
Always happy to hear when my content can help!
Hello. Is it possible to reduce the number of nodes with a slider in Illustrator?
There are a couple of options you’ll want to try: Object > Path > Simplify or Object > Path > Remove Anchor Points.
Game changer.. straight to the point Perfect, keep going
Thank you! More to come very soon.
i am curious how to insert the select more than one object in the action we created?
Selecting objects is not normally something that would be done with an action, however a workaround for this would include adding a Note to the object(s) and then in your action you could click on the Hamburger menu in the Actions panel and then click on Select Object. In the box that appears you'll then add the Note text you added to the object. You would then need to have this Note added to any object(s) you want to select in any additional files. Hope this makes sense. The reason we can't record "select" actions is this would be based on the specific file size and the exact coordinates of the click in the file, while this might work for some instances, it would be rare - thus the Select object by Note alternative.
Oh my word. BEST tutorial on this I've ever seen. Thank you SO MUCH. I finally, finally got this to work for me the easy way. Glory hallelujah. Great work!

I can't believe I never knew of the arch tool till now oh my goodness. I've been cutting up circles this whole time just to get a good curve.
Always happy to hear when my content has been helpful!
What if the image is designed with holes in it? There are multiple layers. Cutting this design on Cricut.
I'm not sure I follow your question, but will try to answer. If you need to cut each layer separately you could export them one by one and then import to the Cricut software. I'm not sure how Critcut will handle layered files.
@@MikePickettDesignCo The file was not in correct format to make changes. The designer resent in EPG format and so now I am able to layer it. The image is designed to purposefully look distorted. Lots of details. I wish I could send a picture. Not sure how to define it. My goal is to cut the vinyl on Cricut to make T-shirts. I’m unsure how I can layer this so it is cut out without looking distorted.
@@giabaker3077 I had to look up the EPG file format... haven't heard of that one before. If the image isn't already in layers, have you tried working with the Image Trace Tool: ua-cam.com/video/-0NVoQK6N5Q/v-deo.html While it may not pickup all of the small details, at the very least you would then have some elements in vector format and could then work from a copy of the original to add in the finer details that were lost in the conversion.
@@MikePickettDesignCo I really appreciate the advice. New to graphics. I thought about an outline and will most definitely check that out. Thanks so much!
Love the tips for image trace. Easy to understand and follow the instructions. I’ll definitely try it on my own now
Thank you for watching and commenting! Hope you learned enough to tackle using it on your own!
Great tutorial, thank you! I am wondering, why sometimes Image Trace doesn't work out well? I get many customers who don't have vectorized logos, but I struggle to understand why some logos (usually more detailed) become blurry, letters become rounded/blended and doesnt trace well? Is it down to the png/jpeg resolution? Or is the problem with me not having enough skills to image trace it properly? I end up rebuilding their logo from scratch, is that common I wonder?
This is actually pretty common, especially when working with a logo or image that is highly detailed. While experience with the tool can help a little, I find that if I have to spend more than 15 or 20 minutes playing around with settings, it’s best to just remake the file.
Mike, thank you so much. Thar is very generous of you. Will look for your email. Be safe and well.
I’ll keep an eye out for the file and get it back to you as soon as possible, might not be able to get to it until tomorrow.
Happy St. Patrick's Day. My problem is I have a challenge coin design that I designed. The Northern District of California for US Attorney's Office has numerous counties. I have the county names separated by bullets and sitting on a circle path. But, there is a hidden paragraph symbol that is preventing me from spacing evening around the circle. I cannot figure out how to remove that hidden paragraph symbol. I do not have paragraph styles. The counties are on one line that is on the circle path. Hope that is less confusing and maybe you can help me. The type was all created in Illustrator. Thank you so much. Be safe and well. Jeanne
If you’d like, you can find my email address in the About section of my channel. Send me the file and I can take a look to see if I can find the issue and then email you back with a fix or directions on how to find the hidden paragraph.
how to delete a paragraph mark on a path?
Sorry, I don't understand your question. If you can provide me with more details I'd be more than happy to help...
7:47 Hi! Thank you for this kind video! I have a question! Sometimes, the Rectangle Properties is disappear and doesn’t show. In that case, how/where I can pull up that again? Sometime, I need to make the round corner manually to give different round for each corner.
Thank you for watching and commenting, you can go to Window > Transform or Shift F8 should work as well.
Thanks for the tips!
Always happy to help!
Video is helpfull
Happy to hear it!
Thx for a gr8 video. I got vector points but my box never went away. Any idea why?
Hard to say without seeing the file you were using… possibly you just need to ungroup and then just delete the box? If it’s a white box there is an option to ignore white that you could try checking.
thanks, well done. My only advice is lose the music,it's distracting.
Thank you for the feedback.
Yesssssss finally got rid of that 'you must click on non-compound...' message :))))) Thanks a lot!

I dont have that side menu with all those icons, tho i have the layer icon... How do i get the other ones?, is there some box i need to check on settings somewhere?
I assume you're meaning the left side tool bar? For this you can go to Window > Toolbars > Advanced If it's something different you're asking for please let me know!
image trace> expand> change olour
Appreciate your input, if you’d care to expand it might help when I update this video later this year for the newest version of Illustrator.
OMGosh! Thank you so much. I needed to trace my own logo to modify it slightly. I should looked you up yesterday instead of wasting hours trying to do it myself. This is a wonderful tool. I liked how you just jumped into the tutorial too :))
Happy it was helpful! Thank you for watching & commenting.
I just subscribed to your channel. I have to create a complicated logo design, and i'm not a graphic designer 🤯. Tomorrow i will use this tutorial to help me out.
Hope it helps! A little advice, logos shouldn’t be complicated. Simple shapes are most memorable. Go look at the top logo design firms & designers and see what they’re creating.
You are the Best!!
Thanks! Now just tell everyone else that. 😜
It was my first lesson. Thank you brother
You’re welcome! New content coming in the New Year.

You could do Joe Rogan vocal impersonations! Thanks for the video! It gave me exactly what I needed
Your'e not the first person to tell me the Joe Rogan suggestion 🤣 Happy to hear the video helped!
Hello, thank you for the video! my line segment tool is turned off, can u please tell me how to activate? thanks in advance
Hey! Not sure what you mean by “turned off” if it’s not visible in the tools menu you can click on the ellipsis button at the bottom of the tools menu, the three dots, and then either find the Line Segment and drag it over to the menu or click on the menu icon in the top right of the fly out and choose Advanced which will show all tools in the tool menu.
@@MikePickettDesignCo yes. it’s not visible. thank u!
Did this work?
@@MikePickettDesignCo i just checked. yes i did according by your instruction, but the segment line is not working.( it’s visible but doesn’t move
Okay, it’s visible in the menu options? But not able to be moved… try turning on Advanced in the menu on the top right of the fly out. If, after advanced is turned on, you still can’t access it you can send me a video to mikepickettdesignco@gmail.com so I can see the issue and maybe I’ll be able to help further via email.
👌👌👌
Thanks!
where are these options in latest Illustrator?
Looks like things are a little different in 2024, you'll want to select the image and then you should see a button under the image for "Image trace" clicking on first, you should then see the Icon for the Image Trace Panel in the tool bar.
I came here looking for location of "New Document Profile" to turn off "Hyphenate" as default, and ended up picking several new tips. Thank you for sharing.
Always happy to hear when my content helps!
how can I do image trace without smoothing corners? 😭
I would need to see an example image of what you’re trying to trace… without that my best advice, play with the sliders - especially the Paths, Corners and Noise sliders in the Advanced options of the Image Trace Panel
@@MikePickettDesignCo omg! first of all, thank you so much for responding to my comment this fast! it's so awesome! I needed a bat illustration, so I decided to find bat logos, or other illustrations on internet, and trace them from image. you know, bats have sharp corners, and the trace couldn't make a exact same bat without smoothing that corners. I tried to edit them, exactly as you told me, yeah it came out as bats with sharper angles, but not completely sharper. there were places where ears were dissappeared, there were some round angles, and etc. I'm confused, because the image I used was an black and white illustration, I don't understand, why is it that hard for illustrator to trace it exact same shape
how to move the selected things after clicking expand
Use either of the select tools…the white or black arrow. You might need to ungroup first though.
